BUXTON bands, choirs and music groups are being invited to become part of celebrations for this year’s London Olympics.

As well as being one of the towns chosen to host the Olympic torch on its tour of Britain, Buxton can also get involved in an event to mark the end of the games.

A Bandstand Marathon is taking place on September 9 and Buxton musicians are being invited to take part.

Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said: "The Bandstand Marathon is a great opportunity to come together with a real sense of community to celebrate the best of your local area."

The event is organised by national not-for-profit arts organisation Superact, who are aiming for 500 locations across the UK hosting simultaneous performances as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Bandstand Marathon has been running since 2008 and 2012 will be the biggest year yet with even more opportunities for local musicians to showcase their talents whilst joining in the spirit of London 2012.

Katharine Lane, Superact’s Associate Director, said: "This really is a unique opportunity for musicians in Buxton to be part of a major national music event and create a musical legacy post London 2012.

"Superact can offer bands a fee to take part plus loads of support with planning and publicity - all of which is invaluable for them in the future."
