The Campaign for National Parks (CNP) is once again coming to the defence of our National Parks.  Today the charity launches a public appeal for donations to support its ‘Fighting Fund’.

Ben Fogle, CNP’s President explains: “These are unprecedented times for National Parks and as the only charity dedicated to protecting and promoting all 13 National Parks of England and Wales, we want to remind people of the relevance of these iconic landscapes, and that they really are worth fighting for.”

“With the announcement of funding cuts to the National Parks’ budgets only days away, CNP is gearing up for a challenging year ahead.  We have to step up and be the champion of the National Parks as their own funding cuts begin to bite. You can make a donation to our fighting fund today by going to http://www.cnp.org.uk/make-a-donation

The ‘Fighting Fund’ appeal will run until the end of March 2011, which coincides with the charity’s 75th anniversary.  Ben Fogle adds: “It’s ironic that on the eve of our 75th anniversary celebrations the National Parks face severe setbacks and major challenges.  The real impact of the spending review is yet to be felt but it is clear that most of the Parks will be forced to cut back on vital activities (such as visitor services, ranger and education teams), to make ends meet.  Unfortunately these cuts will be felt by everyone, especially the Parks’ local communities, and will inevitably diminish visitors’ experience at a time when we need more people enjoying National Parks.”

The role of CNP will be crucial in 2011 and beyond, as it works with others to demonstrate that National Parks have never been so vital.  They represent our finest landscapes and bring pleasure to the millions of people who visit them every year, as well as much needed escapes from the stresses of everyday life.  They are havens for many iconic species and home to much of our cultural heritage, and make a major contribution to tackling climate change.  The Parks are also seen as exemplars in achieving sustainable development and work in partnership to provide affordable housing, green transport and energy, plus support for farmers, helping to maintain thriving rural communities and a high quality natural environment.

Previous appeals have helped to raise vital funds to enable the charity, alongside its partners, to secure the South Downs as Britain’s newest National Park and more recently to campaign successfully against two new nuclear power stations that would have blighted the western boundaries of the majestic Lake District.  Had this proposal been approved it would have had a massive impact on the National Park, with many miles of pylons needed to transport the electricity to centres of population.

A fighting fund will allow CNP to respond immediately and flexibly to the most urgent threats to our National Parks.  All funds raised through the appeal will go directly towards CNP’s current campaigns.  These include pushing for the expansion of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, safeguarding wildlife, promoting sustainable lifestyles and championing the independence of all 13 of these special places.

Ben Fogle urges you to get involved - “This year’s appeal target is £25,000.  We need to raise this amount to keep fighting on behalf of the millions of people who love our National Parks.  Please give what you can. Every donation makes a difference, and every penny is spent wisely to protect these glorious landscapes from harm.  I am so proud to be CNP’s President and with your help we can safeguard these treasured landscapes in the years to come.  We may be celebrating our 75th birthday next year but retirement is a long way off!”

Please make a donation online at http://www.cnp.org.uk/content/latest-appeal or send your donation to us at CNP, 6-7 Barnard Mews, London SW11 1QU.  You can also make a donation over the phone by calling 020 7924 4077 ext 228.  Thank you.
